The sleeping woman, the mermaid behind the dreamy water-window screen, the man’s gaze that is left for us to imagine. The exit sign in the top left corner is the icing on the cake, bringing the viewer (who is made to identify with the man) back to reality. Oh, did I forget to mention the framing and the proportions?
