Patrick Joust was was born in Oroville, California in 1978. He has lived off and on in Baltimore, Maryland since 2002, where his interest in photography began. The people and places of Baltimore are central to his work, influencing how and where he points his camera both within and outside the city limits. Photography appeals to Patrick for the connections it can create. It is a medium that feeds his curiosity and provides a way to engage with his surroundings. What started as a predominantly solitary activity has become very social over the years.
During the day he can often be found engaging Baltimore’s people on the streets, while at night he enjoys capturing urban/suburban landscapes and scenes. Photographing people is the most important thread of his work. Social barriers that might otherwise be in place can sometimes be overcome by a normally reserved guy armed with a clunky old camera.
