I know that some assume that a subject might object, and sometimes they do, but other times they are quite grateful for the outcome. Have a look at the following wonderful story of a photograph taken by photographer Jill Freedman. And more recently, Magnum’s Bruce Davidson is looking for one of his subjects.
As a photographer, who can not aspire to this, the presence, the ghost of one’s self, the oblivious gaze of the subject. But knowing full well the true subject of the image is the self and anything else is supposition on the part of the innocent viewer, reflecting the innocence of the pseudo-subject. Pure brilliance.
